Making The Dying Process Sacred with Music

An award-winning Santa Fe-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Martha Reich has performed around the world and shared stages with Melissa Crabtree, Consuelo Luz, the Reverend Horten Heat and others as well as opening for Kate MacLeod and performing at the Sundance Film Festival.


Martha is also a Certified Music Practitioner, playing for Hospital patients, those in Hospice and people living with Alzheimer’s and Cancer.

Originally from New England, she received a BFA in illustration, but music called and she relocated to Santa Fe in 1999 where she has since released five CDs including the award-winning album entitled BRAVE BIRD.

Her 2018 release, Brave Bird, was described as “stunning and heartbreaking” by Americana Highways and earned her a Gold Medal for Female Vocalist in the 2018 Global Music Awards, as well as the LA Critics Award for Best Folk Artist. Often compared to Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez, Reich is deeply inspired by nature and her unique style features an honesty and vulnerability that evokes “a sound almost woven out of the earth.”


Martha is one of the most open-hearted kind souls I’ve met. We talked a lot about being a healing presence. Some of her favorite ways to stay grounded, calm and a healing presence is to do the following:

  1. Do reiki on yourself every day. While Martha is a master trainer, it is easy to find a Reiki Level I certification and is an incredibly healing practice. I got certified last year and have found doing self-reiki to be life changing.
  2. Read a spiritual or inspirational passage every day to set intentions and connect to.
  3. Get into heart-brain coherence by getting still and meditating using the HeartMath inner balance device which measures your coherence.
  4. Kundalini yoga or any form of yoga
  5. Getting out in nature, be it gardening, hiking or walking. 
  6. Immerse yourself with music and find out which kinds of music help you to feel the best.
