Nutrition Expert on Feeding Your Family (or self) with Jessica Braider

Jessica Braider is a certified health coach and mother of two active and playful boys. As the CEO of The Scramble, an online meal planning service committed to helping busy people get quick, easy, and delicious meals on the table every night, she fulfills her passion for food and her love for working with parents and children to build healthy and happy families. She believes that Food is one of the most powerful tools for building connections. She is committed to the idea that food should be savored, enjoyed, and shared, rather than restricted, avoided, or argued over. Jessica received her training as a health coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She also holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan and a bachelors in Political Science from Haverford College. In her downtime, you can find Jessica in the kitchen experimenting with recipes or outside enjoying time with her husband and kids. You can find Jessica at thescramble.com.
 
We talked a lot about the importance of sharing communal meals, reframing both food as nourishment and how to eat, and how to deal with picky eaters.
 
Things We Learned From This Episode

  • If you have a family and/or children, it’s ideal to serve everything family style. This allows for your children to feel empowered. It gives them their power back.
  • With children, they crave sweet. If they are averse to vegetables, try roasting them for example, since they will by nature be sweeter
  • Reframe eating and family meals to be a place of deep connection, time to be present and hear what’s going on in day to day life.
  • We talked about the many different diets and ways of eating. Jessica referred to the concept of bio indivdiuality, which means that each person has their own genetic make up and needs, pallete, food sensitivites and preferences. There is no one size fits all with regards to ways of eating. Learn to tune into your body and what it craves and desires.
