Michael Diettrich-Chastain on Building the Most Important Skill We Don’t Have Naturally

Michael Diettrich-Chastain is an author, speaker, professional coach, and consultant. He is the founder and CEO of Arc Integrated, an Organizational Consulting and Professional Coaching practice in Asheville, NC. Through a focus on emotional intelligence, leadership, and communication, Arc Integrated empowers individuals and organizations to achieve optimum performance in their work and life.
 
As a consultant, Michael has helped organizational leaders and teams improve employee engagement, productivity, culture, retention, sales and ultimately, the organization’s bottom line. He has facilitated training on leadership, change management, team building, communication, emotional intelligence, employee engagement, self-care, and other topics.

Most human beings struggle with change, which is why we dove deep into strategies and ways to manage change (in whatever form it comes) in a healthy, effective and productive way. Here are some tips to apply to help you:
 
 
Things We Learned From This Episode
 
  1. First off, it’s crucial to create a space where you are compassionate and kind to yourself while dealing with a change or tough period. As you look at the situation at hand, be sure to be empathetic to yourself.
  2. There are seven aspects of change that will help you deal more successfully with turmoil and changes. Michael uses the acronym CHANGES: Cognition, Heart, Action, Nourishment, Guts, Environment, and Spirit.
  3. To change beliefs that are getting in the way of accomplishing what you desire, you’ll want to do two things: evaluate your belief and how it’s showing up in your life (journal and track it) and find examples of ways to disrupt this belief. By tracking your behavior and disrupting your unwanted beliefs, you’ll get a clearer picture of what and how you can change.
  4. Incorporate the 4 R’s to develop greater self-awareness around stress and how your body reacts. The 4 R’s are: reaction or response (notice how your body feels when you are in reaction mode versus responding with choice) and resistance and relaxation (what does your body feel like when you’re resisting something or when you’re most relaxed). Use your body cues to help you learn what triggers you and how to get out ahead.
